A Day in the Life

Picture it: August 2012, Washington DC. While having my nails done at a salon on Wisconsin Avenue, in the chair next to me plopped down Andrea Mitchell, NBC Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent. As a huge fan, I silently shrieked, but stayed still as to not disturb my drying polish. She thanked her manicurist for squeezing her in so late, as she just got in from Tampa and was working the convention floor till 3am each night. She was off to Charlotte the next morning for the DNC. Suddenly I had flash forwards of my life after meeting the great AM.

  1.   I ask her if she needs a new assistant. She says she is impressed by my moxie and sparkling wit, hires me on the spot and we head to Charlotte together.
  2.  I share with her my huge crush on Richard Engle. She set us up, I impress him with my moxie and sparkling wit. He sweeps me off my feet, we honeymoon in Iran, and I become a grande dame at NBC news.
  3. She has me over to her house (sparkling and moxie filled) and she invites me to live with her and hubby Alan Greenspan during which I create a sitcom based on their life titled “The Economist and the News Woman.”

What actually happened? In the 30 seconds I turned away from Ms. Mitchell to choose my top coat, she fell fast asleep, dead to the world. Her blackberry continued to vibrate while she tipped forward slowly in slumber. As my nails dried, I took one last look (a lesser person would have taken a photo), and longingly thought of what could have been.

Next time: Nina Totenberg!
